Story: Die Welt is an audacious hybrid between fiction and documentary, showing contemporary Tunisia shortly after the Jasmine Revolution in 2011. In this insightful moral drama about a society in the vacuum between dictatorship and democracy, we follow the young DVD salesman Abdallah, who becomes increasingly frustrated by his inability to realize a fulfilling existence for himself. After meeting the Dutch tourist Anna, he starts dreaming of a better life in Europe, or Die Welt, as his father calls the promised land on the other side of the Mediterranean. Will Abdallah succeed-like his father did in the past-in getting to Europe with the help of a Dutch woman? Or will he have to find another way to escape his native country? And does he want to leave at all? In his debut, Dutch film director Alex Pitstra investigates his Tunisian roots, which he was unfamiliar with most of his life. He paints a mesmerizing picture of the current state of affairs in his father's country, seen through Western... Written byAlex Pitstra

Die Welt (2013) Review by Mengedegna from Brooklyn, NY
Seen at MOMA, at a ND/NF screening.

This is a smart, sensitive look inside lower middle-class Tunisiansociety by a Dutch director who, as an adult, connected with hisestranged father and Tunisian family and drafted them into a filmproject. Using a rich cast of non- and semi-professionals, many of themrelatives (including the father himself, who had left his family andreturned to Tunisia when Pitstra was 3), Pitstra has tapped into animprovisational groove that works wonderfully well. Anyone who knowsTunisia will perk up, as the characters deliver all the gruff, grumpybut basically good-natured and affectionate banter and humorous abusethat is so characteristic of this deeply specific culture. Noall-Tunisian movie I've seen to date, neither those of Ferid Boughedir, nor even Nouri Bouzid's excellent "Bezness" (which comes closest andeven shares some thematic material with "Die Welt") come close todelivering this kind of zany authenticity. Among many other reasons tolike it, you can tell that this is a film that everyone involved musthave had a great time making.

The story line involves such unfunny topics as youth unemployment, theongoing revolution in the country (treated mostly as voices off, asource of ironic comment and disabused resignation), youthful escapistfantasy, and clandestine emigration. All are treated with a very lightand unprogrammatic touch -- no Sundance or Hallmark-card facileness, no"lessons" here. The plot is actually pretty thin, and so is hard tosummarize, but the characters couldn't be more vivid, includingPitstra's father and the admirable young Abdelhamid Nawara, theprotagonist, the very embodiment of urban Tunisian youth. Theinteraction between these two couldn't be finer or more telling, thoughNawara's finest moment actually comes in the fizzy monologue/rant thatopens the film -- nothing that follows quite reaches this level ofinspired ditziness.

Pitstra proclaims the film part-fiction, part-documentary. He'dprobably hate the term, but it's also an important document. While theIMDb listing shows the film's language as "Arabic", it is (save for thedrab reporting of election results on state radio) almost entirely inDerja, the Tunisian "colloquial Arabic" that is in fact very much aseparate language of the Semitic group, closer to Maltese than it is toArabic, interspersed, very authentically, with lots of French phrases."Die Welt" (Pitstra really should have found a more compelling titlefor international release) documents how this language is spoken todaybetter than other film that I am aware of, in all its colorful andoften obscene glory. Tunisian youth, who more and more demand contentin Derja, as opposed to standard Arabic (which they learn in school butfind fusty and ill-adapted to real-world speech), would adore thismovie for that reason alone, as a reflection of how they hear and seethemselves. Alas, Pitstra says that it has not yet been released there, even in video (since it would instantly be pirated to death). (And thescary scolds who have been consolidating political power woulddoubtless hate it for its precisely those reasons -- theatres thatscreened it might be firebombed, I fear.) But, though the story ends insadness and resignation, most Tunisians I know (or at least the youngerones) would find it thrillingly life-affirming. I hope that somehow asmany of them as possible get to see it.
